How Do I Spend Less on Fluids (Coolants)?

It’s tempting for some to buy what’s cheapest or what people are most familiar with. These factor into the total cost of ownership but are usually not the most significant components in reducing overall spend.

Fluids are bought to lubricate, cool, protect and clean. Their ability to do that depends on chemical make-up, proper application and care. The key to spending less on fluids lies in proper specification,  correct application and efficient maintenance.

To be successful consider the total performance impact such as tool life, part size and finish along with the costs of use like additive requirements, sump life and carry-off. Compare that to what costs could be with fluid that is 100% clean, 100% of the time; automated chip and contaminate removal; no disposal. Finally cost justify improvements to determine what steps make sense now and then implement those ideas.
